Chapter 12

Both Milan and Carlos leaned against the shut door, exhaling profusely. Milan dumped his keys on the hallway corner table and pointed at the couch. “Have a seat and I’ll get the first-aid kit.”

Even though Carlos had a slight buzz going thanks to the three whiskey shots he’d had at the pub, he could still feel the sting and throbbing coming from the lacerations on his upper cheek.

“Thanks,” he said as he slumped into the soft, cushiony black leather sofa.

Milan headed to the kitchen then the bathroom while Carlos slipped his hand into his front pocket of his tight jeans. He retrieved his cell phone and glanced at the screen after he turned it back on.

From the look of things, he’d missed eight calls, all from Rachelle, and eleven texts saying she was sorry he caught her with that man—that the guy meant nothing to her, was just a fling, and that she loved Carlos and would make this up to him.

He snorted and shook his head. Was she serious? Holy cow what a bitch she was. Did she even realize she was just digging herself a deeper hole?

Now he saw her for what she actually was, a narcissist—an opportunist who didn’t really care about anyone except herself. That she never really loved him. She just loved his money and the security it brought her.

After all, hadn’t she been almost broke when they met and begging him to let her sell his condo, saying she could help him find an even better place to live at a good price? She had needed the sale because without it, she’d have lost her job.

He really didn’t want to sell his condo, but somehow she persuaded him to. He felt sorry for her predicament and agreed to let her sell it and find him a new home. She was so grateful that she continued to call him and ask him out on a date. He refused so many times, not wanting to get into a relationship with anyone because he was still in love with his ex, Milan.

But Rachelle never took no for an answer and bit by bit weaseled her way into his life and his heart, until he decided to give love a second chance and let her in.

How could he have been so stupid? The signs were all there piling up month after month. Once he’d fallen for her, she had him exactly where she wanted him. He was her security blanket, her puppet to control as she saw fit. Whenever she asked for money or jewelry or clothes, he always gave it to her without a moment’s hesitation.

Her love and sincerity were all a lie. Their relationship was all a lie. He’d wasted the past year on nothing. What did he have after all this? Nothing except a lighter wallet and a house he never wanted to begin with.

The only silver lining in this was that it brought Milan and Carlos closer together. Their friendship, although different, wasn’t completely lost.
